The mission of the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility is to develop a fully-equipped R&D accelerator chain intended to support research and development of accelerator technology for the next generation of particle accelerators. The primary focus of this effort is the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) ring, which will be able to accept injection with either of the following:
For more on specific projects related to the IOTA injectors and ring, visit the projects portal.
The FAST facility is centered at NML, formerly the New Muon Lab when it was originally built to support experiments in the external beamlines. The electron injector runs through the NML building and a tunnel extension to provide electrons to the IOTA ring beneath the Electronic Service Building (ESB). The Cryomodule Test Facility (CMTF) is immediately next door and is capable of providing cryogenic support if expansion of the existing SRF infrastructure at NML requires.
Access to the buildings is restricted, requiring a badge with an activated RFID or a key. For access to the buildings without these, arrange the visit with your contact in the FAST Department, follow the instructions posted at the building doors, or contact the Fermilab operator at 630-840-3000.
